Club night celebrating the times of push-up bras, spots, slow-dancing and moshing and snogging and trying to get to second base.
This exhibition by photographer Daniel Cohen and journalist Mischa Cohen focuses on the question how a person’s identity and image can be shaped by a chance characteristic like a surname. The ‘ultimate’ Jewish surname Few names leave such a profound mark on their bearers as ‘Cohen’ (meaning ‘priest’), the ‘ultimate’ Jewish surname. Mischa Cohen, an editor at the leading Dutch weekly Vrij Nederland, and freelance photographer Daniel Cohen (no relation), know from experience that Cohens often have some explaining to do, be it about the politics of Israeli settlements, the meaning of Jewish holidays or traditions, the impact of the Shoah or their relationship to Dutch Labour leader Job Cohen. Not every modern-day Cohen can answer questions like these at the drop of a hat. From all ways of life How do other Cohens relate to their name in 2011? Daniel and Mischa uncovered the personal stories of 25 of their namesakes in Amsterdam, interviewing and photographing them against the backdrop of their city. They interviewed women, men, Orthodox Jews, agnostics, pro-Palestinians, Israelis, Jews, and non-Jews from three different generations. A selection of photographic portraits with quotes from the interviews is on display at the exhibition.
In its 2011/2012 exhibition, the Hermitage presents a stunning retrospective of Flemish painters, drawing on the plentiful resources of the Flemish art collection of the Hermitage in St Petersburg.Antwerp School stars With 75 paintings and approximately 20 drawings, the exhibition includes numerous masterpieces by the three giants of the Antwerp School: Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens, accompanied by the work of well-known contemporaries. Rubens (1577-1640) is the special focus of the exhibition, represented by 17 paintings and many drawings. Rubens and his followers Both Rubens’s religious and his secular works illustrate his unequalled talent. One of his masterpieces is the famous Descent from the Cross (ca 1618), a painting that has never before been shown abroad. The exhibition also examines Rubens’s influence and followers in detail, devoting particular attention to the elegant and refined portraits of his greatest pupil, Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). Van Dyck served as the court painter of King Charles I of England for many years. Flemish exuberance The third great master of the Flemish school, Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678), did not study with Rubens but was influenced by him. His impressive paintings invite viewers to share in his exuberant Flemish joie de vivre.
The Jewish Historical Museum presents more than 60 colour and 40 black-and-white examples of the acclaimed artist Saul Leiter’s street photography, as well as a small selection of fashion photographs, paintings and painted photographs.Tranquil moments of everyday beauty Saul Leiter is particularly celebrated for his painterly colour photographs of street life in New York, taken between 1948 and 60. Amid the hectic life of the city Leiter managed to capture tranquil moments of everyday beauty, transforming mundane objects – a red umbrella in a snowstorm, a foot resting on a bench in the metro – into what has been described as ‘urban visual poetry’. Near-abstract compositions Leiter’s photographs are frequently layered, near-abstract compositions of reflections and shadows, which recall paintings by abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, with whom Leiter felt a strong affinity. He is seen as belonging to the New York School of Photographers, a group of innovative artists, most of them Jewish, who achieved fame in New York in the period 1936-1963, primarily with their images of the street and their documentary photography.
Alongside the world-famous Flemish old master paintings in the current exhibition Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens, the Hermitage Amsterdam presents work of eight young Flemish artists, seeking to demonstrate how a new generation of Flemish artists has drawn inspiration from the exhibition.
The already-legendary Amsterdam ‘gabber punks’ invite a slew of illustrious guests for a hedonistic farewell concert.Going out with a bang The Amsterdam duo has been around since 2004; debut album This Is How It Works made waves thanks to their characteristic mix of hardcore punk and techno beats, often referred to as ‘gabber punk’. As fading away is clearly not their thing, the band decided to call it a day in 2011. Naturally, this was not going to happen without an extensive goodbye tour, which culminates in tonight’s show at Paradiso. You’re not alone But Aux Raus won’t say their farewells by themselves. Under the header ‘Aux Raus XL’, their performance is followed by an over-the-top party night with performances and DJ sets by T. Raumschmiere, Joost van Bellen, art noise punks Adolf Butler, Latin-American cult hero Dick El Demasiado and the new lady punk band Vrouwen zijn Okee (‘Women Are Okay’).
